'La Balançoire' is written to invoke the idea of a young
child poised wistfully on an old rope-swing (attached to an aged
tree); free, untroubled, and peaceful.
The entire piece (apart from the faster middle-section in 4/8)
is scored in 6/8, enabling the crotchet-quaver repetitive to invoke
a slightly swung sensation. As various emotions well in the child,
so-too the piece weaves its way from the tree-branch-high catapults,
to the slower toe-dragging meanderings of the child, nostalgically
resting against the ropes of the old still-swing.
'La Balançoire' comes to a conclusion with a progression
that leaves the peace complete, yet the story unfinished.
