These 3 short sketches for piano and oboe are largely meant for
the intermediate oboist. Whilst there is a basic theme that weaves
it's way throughout the 3 movements (appearing in various inversions
and iterations), it is the paradoxical simplicity of the sketches
that will be of most interest.
Inspired by my own oboe students, I wrote these sketches with
a view to students being able to focus more time on performance,
rather than just technical work and exercises.Somewhat 'free in
style' and 'broad in interpretation' (especially the Adagio movement),
students will find the interactions between the oboe and piano
both fun and musically intriguing.
The sketches are largely built on the 'whole-tone' scale, offering
a rich yet simple nuance, whilst challenging the musical maturity
of the performer.
