Where and When?

Tim can provide tuition either at your home, or at his studio in Eltham (whichever is more convenient or available). Due to popular demand, lesson times are flexible to enable students maximum opportunity to schedule their preferred time or day.

Lesson Length & How Often

Each lesson is 1 hour in length (depending on your age and playing level - For more information see - Fees), with an option to increase the lesson to 1.5 hours if required. Tim believes that lessons less than one hour in length, do not allow enough time to cover important and underpinning practical work, whereas lessons that are too long can often cause the students (and teacher), fatigue.

Students should plan for either weekly or fortnightly lessons, depending on the level they are attempting to achieve, and the amount of practice they are able to facilitate.

Piano Lesson OverviewPiano Lesson Overview

Piano lessons with each student are broken down into several components, in order to cover all the relevant teaching and learning material. These components include:

  • Warming Up - This generally involves a combination of loosening-up, finger stretching, wrist and shoulder relaxation, and of course, scales. Tim believes that this preparation (just before the lesson begins), is an essential element of each piano lesson.
  • Playing - This part of the lesson is dedicated to actually playing music. This may be a classical, jazz or popular piece of music, or even something very simple or a piece that is important to the student.
  • Performing - At some point during each lesson, Tim tries to encourage students to perform a selected piece of music. Whilst Tim is often the only person in the audience, this part of the lesson is critical for crossing the bridge between student and performer.
  • Theory - This is basically a recapping of the piano pieces being taught, from the perspective of theory. This is a critical part of every lesson, as it underpins the relevance of each piece of music, and how each piece should ultimately be interpreted.

What to Bring?What to Bring?

Each student is required to bring the following items to each piano lesson:

  • Notepad and pencil
  • Theory work books (if applicable)
  • Practical pieces or music workbooks

How much Practice to Do?How much Practice to Do?

The best rule of thumb is for every 1 hour of piano lessons, to try and do 3 hours of piano practice each week. This will vary depending on the level that the student has achieved, and in some cases may require students to do up to 5 hours each day.

However, 3 hours is generally sufficient for most students in the early stages of learning.
